Transbay Cable Project – San Francisco Bay Area, CA
In April 2009 Sheedy completed the delivery of the eighth and final transformer bound for the Transbay Cable Project. The transformers, each weighing 220,000 lbs., were built by Siemens Energy, Inc., and were shipped two at a time from Europe to the Port of Oakland via a container cargo vessel. A barge crane, supplied by Vortex Marine Construction, Inc., was used to hoist the equipment out of the cargo hold and onto Sheedy's hauling equipment.
Sheedy arranged for delivery of the eight transformers using California legal 13-axile trailers that are capable of hauling loads up to 115 tons. Four of the transformers were delivered to Pittsburg Converter Station in Pittsburg, CA and the other four to the Potrero Converter Station in San Francisco, CA. Sheedy's 350-ton hydraulic all-terrain crane then hoisted the transformers off the trailer and placed them into final position on prepared concrete pads at teach location.
When completed, the Transbay Cable Project will supply the City of San Francisco with reliable electrical energy from a power plant more than fifty miles away. The plant in Pittsburg will send alternating electrical current to a nearby converter station where it will be transformed into direct electrical current. The D/C power will then be delivered to San Francisco by way of a a400-megawatt underwater cable where it will be reconverted back to A/C power at the Potrero Converter Station before being distributed to the local power grid.
